News article on the last orchard
An exhibit to delight all who love Chico, art, kids, birds and books opens at Avenue 9 Gallery with a reception 5-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1.

"Birds and Words" features Candy Matthews, a watercolor artist, and writer Naty Osa, together with her son, Javier Durá, an illustrator.

Matthews, Osa and Durá all draw inspiration from the birdlife attracted by Chico's agricultural surroundings. Consummate storytellers in images and words, they underpin whimsy with a sense of life's perils.

Matthews, using fluid washes and lyrical lines, paints the poetry of everyday life.

"I take great pleasure in observing the bird visitors to our neighborhood — robins, finches, sparrows, and we even had a great horned owl in a neighborhood tree that everyone came out to view," Matthews said. "The intense look in the owl's predatory eyes fascinated me, and yet it was lovable, too."

She also depicts those comforting rituals of daily life that keep us balanced.

"I'm a real homebody," she said. "My husband and I love to sit in our back garden, sipping coffee and watching sparrows, blue jays and hummingbirds go about their lives.

"One day, I decided to paint a little sparrow perched on the rim of my cup. Using a mirror, I drew my own hands with their arthritic bones holding the cup that symbolized comfort and warmth. To me, the bird stood for all the vitality of life."

Naty Osa writes children's books that her son Durá illustrates. Durá, who graduated from Chico High, has lived in Spain for the past 12 years.
Now Available!! Our new picture book! The Last Orchard, written by Naty Osa and Illustrated by Javier Dura, blurs the boundaries between dreams and reality. It is a delightful story about the family of the earth: people, animals, beautiful trees and how interconnected they are. Each needs the other to thrive and survive. The soaring imagination of two little boys, nurtured by their grandmother’s stories, provides the vehicle through which they—with the help of the snow geese—will try to save a community treasure: the last orchard in town.
